Father Peter from NigeriaAs you may know, Hosanna Harbors is a new non-profit whose mission is to provide substantive hope to individuals and families in the St. Croix Valley, in and surrounding the Washington County communities of Hugo and Forest Lake, through programs and services. The Hugo Community Food Shelf operates within Harbors. Harbors is also seeking grants to help with these programs, so please let us know of resources of which you are aware. Plans are underway to open a retail store selling fair trade goods from around the globe at Victor Marketplace in Hugo. The new center is located between Hugo and 35E.

The concept of fair trade is one that has grown in recent years. Sale of these goods provides vital, fair income to Third World people by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. (excerpt from Ten Thousand Villages brochure) Harbors will be working through Ten Thousand Villages, which has a store on St. Paul’s Grand Avenue, to bring these goods into our community. Other principles of fair trade operations include:

  • Honoring the value of seeking to bring justice and hope to the poor
  • Trading with artisan groups who pay fair wages and demonstrate concern for their members’ welfare
  • Providing consistent purchases, advances and prompt final payments to artisans
  • Increase market share in North America for fairly traded handicrafts
  • Marketing quality products that are crafted by under-employed artisans
  • Building sustainable operations using a variety of sales channels, including a network of stores with a common identity
  • Choosing handicrafts that reflect and reinforce rich cultural traditions, that are environmentally sensitive and which appeal to the North American consumer
